The online magazine & network for Soulful & Spiritual Living
All too often I feel that spiritual pursuits are focused on what you should not be doing. The things you should abstain from or how to avoid your own bad habits. All of that is fantastic, but today I want to talk about what you SHOULD do, what you should find, discover, embrace.
That thing, is your own passion. In life we often get lost in the very mundane and passion seems far from our doors. On an average week how many times do you feel passionate about something? I don't mean angry, or frustrated. Those are very different emotions than the emotion that is the essence of passion. I'm not talking about the blood boiling fierce type of passion that is mad, bad and dangerous, but rather the passion of love, truth, ecstasy, fulfillment and enjoyment. Now that love can be for anything, a person, a hobby, a pet, a child, a job... you know what your passions are. As yourself how often do you let your true passions infiltrate your mind and body? How often do you 'put off' your passion and instead attend to other people or tick things off your boring 'to do list'?
We may often seek it in relationships with others, which is a valid outlet. But true, mad, lasting passion can be found in all things that get you excited, the things that inspire you, the things that make you who you are. Women in particular forget that we can be powerhouses of our own passions, without a partner to ignite them. We can embrace something we love and do it with finesse, love and mad passionate adoration. But do we do this? Do we see our passions as a 'to do later' kinda thing. Do we put it off till our retirement, or the weekend, or on holiday? And if we are storing up our passions for a later time, then surely our lives are becoming a little flat a little 2D, a little, well, pointless and soulless?
Passion should not be boxed and saved for later. It is not simply for the bedroom or for
one other soul. Passion should infiltrate every aspect of your existence, and if it doesn't, maybe you should start asking 'why not?' Seriously... why not, we live only once and passion is one of our powerful gifts. We can bring passion into everything we do, childcare, trips to the supermarket, our hobbies, all our relationships. We can choose to really, really care and commit to our very own lives and we can value them... with a passion. We can desire every last iota of our world, good or bad, rain or shine. Surely isn't this the best way to live?
So if your passions have plummeted away of late, it's time to relight the spark. Start with the obvious. Whatever it is that immediately floats your boat, get into it or on it or in the middle of it this very weekend. Do not put off your passion a moment longer. Take a second to meditate and a second may be all it takes. Ask your passion to show itself, to be felt inside you, open yourself to it and believe. Your passion is here, just under the surface, scratch it and let it out!

Great blog Alice! All fired up now and feeling more determined to prioritise what I love doing most! It makes perfect sense that if you spend more time doing what you love, there is less time for the other stuff to take up your energy. I guess it's about remaining mindful of each moment rather than getting lulled by the hum-drum!
Alice,
Thanks so much for this post! Today, I absolutely committed to my passion for writing by asking myself this question: "What am I passionate about more than anything?" I assumed, briefly, I would come up with, "Writing." What I wrote was this: "Expressing my visions, thoughts, and feelings through artistic/creative outlets." Next, I also asked myself, "What is my primary outlet?" Answer, "Writing", and secondary, "Cooking" and third, "Anything to do with photography or drawing."I relaxed my body and thoughts first before asking these questions. Now, I am going to get the writing books out and create a writing program that is tailored for me. I am "relighting the spark." instead of letting it dissipate in the maelstrom of monkey mind thinking.
Love and Light,
Lauren
